Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What will Bear Head project produce?

A: We plan to use renewable energy to produce green hydrogen from water. We then plan to use the green hydrogen to make green ammonia using nitrogen drawn from the air.

Q: Where will the renewable energy come from?

A: We anticipate that the majority of renewable energy will come from new onshore and offshore wind development.

Q: When will the project begin construction?  Production?

A: We expect the project to be developed in multiple phases. The initial engineering design work is currently underway, and the project could begin deliveries of green hydrogen and ammonia by 2028.

Q: How large will this project ultimately become?

A: This is still under evaluation but initial engineering suggests that the site can reasonably support two gigawatts of electrolysis capacity.

Q: Is Bear Head still developing an LNG export facility?
A: Bear Head is fully committed to developing green hydrogen and ammonia.

Q: Will there be a local economic impact?

A: Yes.  We anticipate that the project will benefit the Strait of Canso and Cape Breton Regions by creating a meaningful number of local jobs, both during construction and operations.  We have already begun to engage a range of local service providers.  As we have in the past, we will continue to consult with the Mi’kmaq communities to ensure that our development plan has their support.  In addition, we believe this project will help Nova Scotia, and Canada, to achieve its objectives for a clean energy future.

Q: What will be the local environmental impact?

A: The plant’s operations, will primarily use renewable energy and produce green hydrogen and ammonia. In addition, hydrogen and ammonia are industrial materials that are commonly produced and stored in a safe manner and our green versions of these materials will be no exception. The plant will be operated in a very safe manner and in accordance with our regulatory filings. As with all production facilities, our emergency response plan will be made public as we approach production.

Q: What is Bear Head’s stance when it comes to health and safety?

A: Health and safety are fundamental core values to our business.  We strive for these values daily, not only for the benefit of our own employees and assets but also for the communities and environment around us.

Q: Where does the name Bear Head come from?

A: The name comes from the shape of the land mass at the northern end of the peninsula on which our project is located, just west of the community of Point Tupper.
